Ways to Answer the Question 'What Do You Do?'

The question “What do you do?” is used to ask about a person’s occupation. You should distinguish it from “What are you doing?” as it refers to your current activity.

A: What are you doing?
B: I’m mowing the grass.

We can answer the question ‘what do you do?’ in more than one way:

I am + occupation
I am a police officer, I’m a teacher, I’m a student.
Don’t forget to use an indefinite article before the name of the profession.

I work at + name of the company
I work at Coca Cola, I work at General Motors.

I work in + place
I work in school, I work in a hospital.

I work for + organization
I work for the government, I work for the BBC.
